Bishop responds to forced retirement

by Angela Blanchard
Thursday, May 15, 2008

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The former head of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska says he was retired without his permission or knowledge.

Leaders of the Orthodox Church in America announced Wednesday that Bishop Nikolai would be retired with the title "Former Bishop of Sitka."

The announcement came months after some clergy and laity in the church accused Nikolai of being verbally and emotionally abusive.

In an e-mail response, Bishop Nikolai says he did not ask to retire and views this as another example of the church disregarding proper procedure.

Nikolai stepped down and left the state nearly two weeks ago. "
