The Holy Synod of Bishops
The Orthodox Church in America

Your Beatitude, your Eminences, your Graces,

We are writing to you as senior members of the clergy alarmed by the controversy surrounding the OCA’s finances and administration. Sadly, attempts by the Holy Synod to resolve this matter have thus far been inadequate. Damaging allegations, documents and discussions on the internet are threatening to drag the OCA deeper and deeper into disrepute and disorder. Good people who have raised honest questions have been vilified or silenced. Indeed, many of us have been approached by younger clergy who dare not speak out. On the other hand, those implicated by the allegations have also been subjected to summary judgments and attacks. The longer this is allowed to go on, the more factions develop among us. While perhaps many of our parishioners are still unaware of all of this, there is little doubt that the crisis risks becoming a very public scandal.

We exhort you to take swift action now to restore good order, confidence and trust in the OCA’s administration. Ensure that our faithful see the same standards of accountability and ethical behavior that they expect from their own parishes, from their priests and from other charitable institutions.

We ask that the Holy Synod put in place a fair and transparent process to investigate the allegations. We urge you to appoint an unbiased commission composed of bishops, priests, and laity to conduct the investigation and, if deemed necessary by the commission, to oversee independent audits of all Church accounts, and that it be given full authority and all necessary resources to complete its task. At the conclusion of the investigation, the findings of the commission should be communicated to the whole Church.

Each of us has served the Church as clergy for at least twenty years. However painful this process will be, we believe it is absolutely necessary. But we also believe that in the end there should be mercy enough for all. The OCA should not only be restored to good order but to that mutual love which covers a multitude of sins and which alone is the sign that Christ is in our midst.

Please be assured of our prayers and support as you seek to resolve this crisis.

Asking your blessing and prayers, with love in Christ,
